Across 149 active Instagram accounts analyzed by highviz, the median engagement rate by reach (ERR) in 2026 is 12.1%. Half of all accounts land between 5.9% and 19.8%.
That number probably looks high next to the 1% to 4% you see quoted in most engagement benchmark roundups. The difference is the denominator. Those figures divide interactions by your follower count, while ERR divides them by reach, the number of accounts that were actually shown the post. Reach-based rates run higher because reach is almost always smaller than your follower count. They're also the more honest measure: how a piece of content did with the people who saw it, not the people who happen to follow you.

What counts as a good engagement rate by reach
We ranked all 149 accounts by their engagement rate by reach. Use these tiers to place your own account.
- Below 2.7%: the bottom 10% of accounts.
- 5.9%: the bottom 25 percent mark.
- 12.1%: the median, a solid and typical result.
- 19.8%: the top 25 percent mark.
- Above 36.6%: the top 10% of accounts.
Engagement rate by account type
Splitting the sample by the category each profile reports, creators sit close to the overall median while business accounts trail the field. Each row below shows the median, the range across the middle half of accounts, and how many accounts fall in that group.
- Creator: 12.8% median, 6.4% to 21.4% across the middle half, 57 accounts.
- Business: 7.1% median, 4.3% to 13.4%, 48 accounts.
- Personal: 14.5% median, 10.7% to 17.7%, 16 accounts.
- Uncategorized: 16.7% median, 10.3% to 20.9%, 26 accounts.
One plausible reason business accounts trail: business profiles often reach a broader, colder audience through discovery and promotion, so a larger share of the people who see a post have no prior relationship with the brand and are less likely to interact. That's one read of the gap, not a proven cause, and because category here is self-reported, treat the split as directional.
Engagement rate by posting volume
Grouping accounts by how many posts they have published over their lifetime shows a steady pattern: the more an account has posted, the lower its median engagement rate by reach.
- 0 to 30 posts: 14.1% median, 8.3% to 25.0%, 69 accounts.
- 30 to 100 posts: 11.1% median, 3.6% to 16.9%, 42 accounts.
- 100 to 500 posts: 9.9% median, 5.6% to 15.5%, 31 accounts.
Accounts with more than 500 lifetime posts existed in the sample but in too small a number to report a reliable benchmark.
A reasonable interpretation is that smaller, earlier-stage accounts reach a denser core of engaged followers, while larger back catalogues pull in more passive or lapsed reach that dilutes the rate. This is a correlation across accounts, not a promise that posting less will lift your own rate.
Carousels, single images and reels
Moving from accounts to individual posts, we compared the median engagement rate by reach for each format across roughly 7,300 feed and reel items. We report medians rather than averages here, because a handful of viral items pull the averages far above what a typical post sees.
- Carousels: 12.8% median engagement by reach, 1,892 items.
- Single images: 9.1% median, 5,101 items.
- Reels: 6.3% median by reach, 269 items.
Carousels lead single images by a clear margin. Reels look weaker on this measure, but that's largely an artifact of the denominator: reels are built to travel, and they routinely reach far more non-followers than a feed post does. Spread that reach across a lot of people who don't follow you and the rate per person drops, even when the raw interaction count stays high.

How to read your own number
There are two common ways to express an engagement rate, and they answer different questions.
- By reach (ERR): interactions divided by reach, times 100. Interactions are likes, comments, saves and shares. This is the measure used throughout this study.
- By followers: interactions divided by your follower count, times 100. This is the figure most tools show, and it runs lower because your follower count is usually larger than any single post reach.

Methodology and limitations
This study draws on aggregated, anonymized data from 149 active Instagram accounts connected to highviz, covering roughly 7,300 feed and reel items that had reach data available. Internal and deleted accounts were excluded.
Account-level engagement rates come from each account stored engagement profile: interactions divided by reach, expressed as a percent. We report medians and the ranges around them rather than averages throughout, because a few outlier posts would otherwise pull an average far away from what a typical account sees. The dataset was generated on 2026-07-20.
Three limitations are worth stating plainly. The sample skews toward small and mid-size accounts that chose to connect an analytics tool, so it's not a random sample of all of Instagram. Follower-based rates aren't computable from this dataset, so every figure here is reach-based. And account category is self-reported, which is why the category splits should be read as directional rather than definitive.
